In the past, their work has been based principally on defending and promoting civil and political rights, due mostly to the repression Mexico was facing in the 80s and 90s against social activists and political leaders among others, where much of their time was dedicated towards documenting these violations. The Centre introduced a system of legal defense to complement their work aimed at achieving justice and compensation for victims, and bringing to justice those responsible. Since 1996, The Centre PRODH also began working on the promotion and defense of the rights of HIV positive patients, and the rights to health and to work.
