Background

Partners in Human Rights Education was created in 1992 by the Human Rights Center at the University of Minnesota and Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights. Partners was created to teach international human rights and responsibilities to students, using the framework of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Objectives

Partners has three main objectives which include:

the creation of community teams which will assist teachers in intructing students in human rights and fostering respect for human dignity with the goal of creating advocates for human rights at the local, national and international levels

providing teams with a human rights framework which will form the foundation and begin the questioning on how to make the world a better place to live

developing action products which make relavent connections between learning human rights in the classroom and active participation in the community

Participants

In addition to the staff, Partners depends upon the involvement of many volunteers. Included in these volunteers are the more than 200 individuals involved in teaching teams which have helped in bring human rights education into the classroom.

Resources

Human Rights Education Resource Library which contains a large collection of human rights related documents and lesson plans

Explorer newsletter which comes out bi-monthly, informing the public of human rights issues and updates on the Partners program

A Community Action! Fund which funds various activities integrating real-life action and experience with classroom curriculum

Human Rights Fair which is an annual celebration of students and families an their involvement with human rights

The Partners in Human Rights Fellowship Program which links participants to active human rights experiences throughout the world
