The
Human Rights Center encourages residents of the Upper Midwest—including
students, teachers, lawyers, health professionals, community leaders and
others—to undertake
practical experiences/internships in human rights organizations. The Fellowship Program is designed to promote social justice by providing practical
training in the varied aspects of human rights work worldwide. The fellowship
placement should provide both training for the individual and assistance
to the host organization.
*Note: For 2014, almost all of the program’s funding is restricted to law students and University of Minnesota graduate human rights students. See the Background section of the Fellowship Guidelines and Application for details.
The University of Minnesota Human Rights Center Fellowship Program also fosters
links between communities in the Upper Midwest and human rights/social justice organizations
around the world. Participants return with a stronger commitment to a lifetime
of work in human rights/social justice and contribute to bringing human rights concerns
home to communities in the Upper Midwest. The human rights/social justice movement itself
can benefit greatly from collaboration among individuals from different social,
political, economic, and cultural backgrounds.

International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)

Special Application Procedure –
Deadline Fri., Nov. 22, 2013, 4:00 p.m. CST**
A separate process exists or applicants interested in serving fellowships with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda or the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Because the ICTR and ICTY require formal institutional nomination, all application materials for their internship programs must be submitted to the Human Rights Center by November 22 at 4:00 p.m. Applicants are NOT to apply directly to the ICTR or ICTY.
PLEASE NOTE: The dates for service with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia are somewhat flexible, meaning that a summer internship is possible. The ICTR has a preference for applicants who can serve at least three months, but will accept applications for service ranging in duration from two to six months. The ICTY accepts applications for service ranging in duration from three to six months.

Applicants must submit not only the Tribunal’s application materials, but also the application materials for the Human Rights Fellowship Program (except for the letter of commitment from the host organization, and the precise description of your proposed fellowship work, since it will be impossible at this point to know to what work you might be assigned by the Tribunal). These materials must be submitted to the Human Rights Center by November 22, 2013 at 4 p.m. CST.
After November 22, if there are applicants with sufficient qualifications for these highly competitive internships, the Human Rights Fellowship Program will select and present for Dean Wippman’s approval one nominee for each Tribunal. The nominees will be assisted by the Human Rights Center in finalizing their applications and submitting them to the Tribunal.
