University of Minnesota Human Rights Library Recognized by U.N. Body
During the week of 16-20 September 1996 the chairpersons of the six human rights treaty bodies met in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss common problems facing the Human Rights Committee, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and the Committee against Torture. The 1996 session was the seventh annual meeting of the chairpersons.
One of the conclusions and recommendations of the chairpersons in their report (U.N. Doc. A/51/... para 35 (1996), which was agreed on 20 September 1996 and is scheduled to be published on 10 October 1996 was the following:
"The chairpersons note that there have been extensive delays in efforts by the Centre for Human Rights to develop electronic information databases that were recommended by the Commission on Human Rights in 1989. They note that in the meantime there have been many major developments in human rights databases especially on the World Wide Web and that materials of direct relevance to the work of the treaty bodies are now available on databases, such as those of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (http://www.unhcr.ch), the International Labour Organization (http://www.ilo.org), UNICEF (http://www.unicef.org), and the University of Minnesota (http://hrlibrary.law.umn.edu and http://heiwww.unige.ch/humanrts/). They urge those involved in the development of these databases to seek to include treaty body materials as fully as possible on their sites and recommend that the UN Centre for Human Rights should make particular effort to cooperate in every possible way with the complementary development of such databases."

An excerpt from the jury;
"[...] the jury was especially pleased with the vast amount of human rights information provided in a concise and structured way. Many of the materials, amongst others the views by various human rights treaty bodies, has not been provided on the World-Wide Web before. Moreover, the plain and simple lay-out guarantees pleasant reading and fast loading. The University of Minnesota Human Rights Library is a forerunner in the field [...]"
